On 31 May, students from WeCan schools, WeCan scholars and colleagues from Wheelock/Wharf Group had a chance to hear the inspiring story of Phearong, a young Cambodian lady who benefitted from Wedu, an organisation which aims to unlock the leadership potential of women in Asia.

From a rural village in Cambodia, Phearong is the youngest of the five children in her family and first to attend university.  With a strong will and support from Wedu, including lifelong mentorship and financial assistance, Phearong overcame all challenges and completed her bachelor’s degree last year, and is now working full time at an embassy and studying part-time for her master’s degree.  Phearong’s story proves the life-changing impact of education, not only to herself, but also to her family and community.

Attendees were all inspired by Phearong’s story, and impressed by her ability to share in English despite the fact that she only learned the language five years ago.  WeCan students in particular were moved by Phearong’s experience and were more determined to pursue their own dreams!
