WeCan Scholarship Presentation Ceremony 2017/18 was held on 25 November 2017 at Tsang Chan Sik Yue Auditorium, Hong Kong Baptist University, and 99 students were awarded the WeCan Scholarships this year.  The Scheme has so far benefitted a total of 230 students since its launch two years ago.

The event was officiated by Mr Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, JP, Secretary for Education of the HKSAR Government and Mr Stephen Ng, Chairman of Project WeCan Committee.  In their speeches, they both congratulated the awardees, encouraged them to equip themselves to better seize the opportunities available in the fast-changing era, and urged them to give back to the society using their own skills and knowledge.  Representatives from the eight UGC-funded tertiary institutions also joined the Ceremony to show their support for the awardees.

At the Ceremony, one of the scholarship recipients, David Che, shared his dream of becoming a pilot after falling in love with flying at a flight simulator experience at F4.  Studying Aviation Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, David was grateful for being awarded the scholarship as it helped realise his dream by allowing him to enroll in aviation courses and related training sessions.  Wilson Wong, another recipient who studies Financial Technology at the Hong Kong Chinese University, also shared his tough journey to being admitted to his dream university, and how he overcame the challenges with the invaluable support of his mentor.  Two WeCan Scholarship alumni, Cai Yiting and Joyce Qiu, played the piano and further graced the Ceremony with beautiful music.

Members from the WeCan Alumni Executive Committee (“ExCo”) introduced the activities they participated in 2017. By sharing their volunteering experience as Exco members, they hope to motivate all WeCan Alumni members to actively participate in community services and give back to WeCan.

The new scholars attended the first gathering after the Ceremony.  The committee reviewed last year’s activities and announced new events in the coming year.  Scholars were encouraged to actively take part in  WeCan activities to give back to WeCan, broaden their horizons, make new friends and showcase their talents.
